Learning with Robots

Every Monday and Friday, Mr Rob Kelly (Berwick Lodge Primary School’s multimedia and robotics co-ordinator), teaches robotics lessons to the school. In Term 1 and 2, he worked with the senior school and in Term 3 and 4, he is working with the middle and junior school.

In Foundation/Prep – Level 2, robotics is taught using BeeBots and Scratch Jr (on the iPads). In Level 3/4, the students progress to Scratch V2 (on desktops/laptops) and the Lego WEDO kits. In Level 5/6, the students learn to program and code using the Lego Mindstorm kits and participate in Australia’s First Lego League and RoboCup competitions.

On a Tuesday afternoon at Berwick Lodge Primary School, eight students attend a special STEM Learning extension program (formerly known as Real Time Learning). This class is a superior robotics lesson where students learn to build and code robots – using Arduino at a Year 10 – VCE level.

The lessons are designed to test the student’s problem solving skills and multiplicative thinking – while developing and sharpening their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills.
